Forbidden rice, also known as black rice, is a whole grain with a striking deep purple-black color that turns darker when cooked. It has a mild, slightly nutty flavor and a chewy texture. The name "forbidden rice" is believed to have originated from ancient China, where it was once reserved exclusively for royalty, as it was considered so valuable and rare that common people were forbidden from eating it.
