Marshmallow root (Althaea officinalis) is an herb with a long history of use in traditional medicine, especially for soothing the respiratory and digestive systems. When the root is cut and sifted, it's ready to be used in teas, tinctures, or even topical applications. The root contains mucilage, a gelatinous substance that becomes slippery when wet, making it excellent for soothing irritated tissues, such as sore throats, coughs, or digestive discomfort.

Marshmallow root is often used in herbal remedies for colds, coughs, and bronchitis because it helps calm inflammation and irritation in the throat and respiratory tract. It’s also known to support the digestive system, helping to soothe conditions like gastritis, heartburn, or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

To use the cut and sifted root, you can make a tea by steeping the root in hot water or create a decoction by simmering it for a longer time to extract more of the mucilage. The root can also be used to make homemade throat lozenges or mixed into syrups for added soothing effects.
